Presentations: The Melting Pot

Presentation by Marian Volkman
Metapsychology - long term personal development approach

Tuesday August, 12th 2008

We had the great pleasure of having Marian Volkman to talk at the Melting Pot again. This time she talked about metapsychology and the benefits for long term personal development opportunities.
This event was a great opportunity to meet the trainers, other trainee and TIR facilitators

About Metapsychology:

by Frank A. Gerbode, M.D. Director, IRM

Like any other general subject of study, metapsychology is not committed to a specific method, nor to a fixed belief system. It is the study of the origin, structure, and function of the mind and of the relationship between the mind or spirit and the physical universe. It is a study of the individual, his abilities, and his experience, as seen from his point of view.

It picks up where psychology, as the science of behavior, leaves off. Hence the name "meta-psychology" has the correct connotation of being a study that goes "beyond" psychology -- beyond the study of behavior to the study of that which behaves -- the person himself, and the person's perceptual, conceptual, and creative activity, as distinguished from the actions of his body. In this sense, "metapsychology" restores the original meaning of "psychology" as "the study of the soul, or spirit", and the applications of metapsychology reflect the perennial common goal of both therapy and religion, whether one calls this goal the attainment of sanity, of enlightenment, of happiness, or of salvation. We sometimes abbreviate "metapsychology" as "MP".

The Second Happy Birthday of The Melting Pot!

We Celebrated the 2nd year of Networking and Presentations at the Melting Pot

On this happy occasion our very special guest was Marian Volkman.

Marian K. Volkman is seen as one of the most senior technical people in the development of TIR and metapsychology. Marian is a principle author of many of the TIR and metapsychology workshops. Marian is also the author of "Life Skills" and "Turtle Dolphin Dreams".

She will give a talk about:

TRUE LOVE

Chinese for Love

Love has always been the subject of big debate, enduring speculation and thoughtful introspection. How understanding the mechanics of dysfunctionality in relationships helps us to have the kind of relationship we want:

What makes some people too needy and clingy?
What makes some people flinch at intimacy, even if it's something they say they want?
What is "true love"?
How can we achieve "true love"?
Marian will discuss intimacy, communion, co-/counter- dependency and more.

Some brief definitions:

* In Wikipedia Intimacy is defined as both the ability and the choice to be close, loving and vulnerable and that it requires identity development.

* Knowing thyself is crucial in order to be able to share your self with another.
* Co-dependency (or co-dependency) is a psychological condition in which someone exhibits too much, and often inappropriate, caring for other people's struggles.

* Counter-dependency is a psychological condition opposite of co-dependency.

And also describe Traumatic Incident Reduction and Life stress reduction as a forms of a highly integrative counselling approach incorporating Mindfulness. Most of the tools used in TIR and LSR enable the client to achieve greater equanimity with respect to his/her mental and physical environment.
According to Cayoun (2003) equanimity is the ability to remain unperturbed by an event experienced within the framework of one's body and thoughts as a result of objective observation. This implies that unless one is aware of an actual (internal) experience, one cannot be equanimous towards it. This defined, equanimity relies on awareness on one's thoughts and body sensations.
