What is the minimum qualification for doing a mindfulness course?
Our courses are aimed at mental health professionals. If you are not already a mental health professional or in training to be one, please contact us and we will consider you on an individual basis. As Mindfulness cannot be learnt without applying it to yourself, all our entry level trainings focus on that. Therefore it can work to have people on the course how are primarily interested in improving their own well-being. However it would not be appropriate if such a person were in the middle of a major depression, bereavement or other all consuming situation. Generally speaking there is no minimum qualification for doing a introductory mindfulness course.
In case of intermediate and above levels there are certain criteria which must be met by the attendees. You can check our training page for details.
Our courses provide a significant component of the requirements for accreditation as a counselor, psychotherapist or Cognitive Behavioural therapist. This can be used either with the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP), the British Association of Cognitive and Behavioural Psychotherapies (BABCP) or other. However, be aware that accreditation with both of these bodies consists of you being assessed as an individual. There are no rubber stamp courses or exams that get you your accreditation. The criteria for accreditation are also likely to change very soon. There is an on going debate about how this unregulated profession will become regulated. Rather than seeking an externally accredited course (that does not entitle you to accreditation anyway), we recommend building your own portfolio of evidence for the above mentioned accrediting bodies. They do not require you to do an externally accredited course, but do require you to fulfill a certain set of criteria. These criteria can be met with a portfolio of evidence. Our training can make up part of that portfolio. Simplistically such accreditation bodies require around 450hours of training and around 450hours supervised clinical practice, part of which must be completed on a formal placement in a mental health organization or charity. The accreditation processes also require you to submit detailed case studies of your client work along with other writing that examine your personal practice. You also usually need around 30hours of CPD during your year of accreditation and subsequent years. Those of you following this path with one of the above accrediting bodies will require extra supervision on top of the supervision included in the course. You can arrange with ourselves or an appropriate external supervisor. We also urge you to read the fine details of the accreditation criteria of your preferred accrediting body, and to consult directly with them about your individual route to accreditation. Accreditation is not compulsory although it is preferable.
